The Digital
art Certificate (DAC) standard

The Digital Art Certificate (DAC) framework, developed in alignment with International Telecommunication Union (ITU) standards, establishes a secure, institutional-grade infrastructure for authenticating digital and physical artworks. By bridging established legal frameworks with cryptographic security, the standard resolves systemic issues of provenance and trust in the digital art market. To accommodate different technical requirements and use cases, the framework is structured around two distinct tiers: the foundational DAC and the advanced DAC+.

The cornerstone of the DAC is the integration of a Qualified Electronic Signature (QES), governed by the European eIDAS regulation, which has compatible standards in other countries such as in Switzerland (ZertES) or in the USA (ESIGN/UETA). Because a QES carries the exact same legal weight as a handwritten signature witnessed by a notary, the DAC creates a legally binding link between the artist's verified identity and the artwork. Delivered in universally accessible formats (such as PDF), the standard DAC avoids the friction of proprietary platforms or complex wallet management, making it easily adoptable by traditional galleries and collectors. The certificate explicitly outlines royalty agreements, copyright details, and exhibition terms, providing immediate legal recourse in case of disputes.

The DAC+ tier elevates the foundational standard by seamlessly linking the legally binding PDF with QES digital signature to on-chain infrastructure, fully integrating with Web3 and decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystems. For example, DAC+NFT binds the off-chain legal certificate directly to a specific NFT token ID and smart contract address. This dual-layer approach ensures that the blockchain record is backed by legally recognized, real-world identity verification. By embedding the certificate's parameters into smart contracts, DAC+ enables the automated execution of secondary market royalties and rights management, ensuring artists are compensated transparently. To counter the proliferation of purely AI-generated content, DAC+ integrates mechanisms like Human Time Tokens (HTT) where artists cryptographically certify the hours of human labor invested in the creation process, transforming human effort into a verifiable metric of value. DAC+ is optimized for pairing digital certificates with physical counterparts (e.g., via NFC chips or RFID), ensuring an unbreakable chain of custody for traditional art pieces transitioning into digital registries.

The dual-tier approach allows the art market to transition at its own pace. The standard DAC provides immediate legal security and peace of mind for traditional stakeholders, while DAC+ offers the ultimate cryptographic, on-chain provenance required for the future of liquid art digital asset management. Together, they establish a new global benchmark for authenticity.
